Port Shepstone Lighthouse

Port Shepstone's coastline is protected by the 8 metre high Port Shepstone Lighthouse, which is decorated with a distinctive checkerboard design.

Imported from Britian in the 1890's, this cast-iron lighthouse originally stood in Scottburgh, marking Aliwal Shoal's southern end. Shortly thereafter it was relocated to its present position in Port Shepstone, where it has stood for over a century.

Guided tours and tours for school groups are available daily.

A Tourism Information Office can also be found on the property of Port Shepstone lighthouse, which provides breathtaking views over the Umzimkulu River mouth and Port Shepstone Beach.

Port Shepstone Lighthouse, now a national monument, is still in working order and has a range of 26 sea miles. It revolves automatically and is powered by an electric light which flashes once every 6 seconds.
