Union Buildings Pretoria

Forming part of the logo for the City of Tshwane, The Union Buildings is truly one of the most recognizable buildings in South Africa.

This building has great historic significance, as it makes up the seat of the South African government and houses the Presidential Offices.  It is also the place where former president, Nelson Mandela’s inauguration ceremony was held on May 10th, 1994.

The sandstone building, designed by Sir Herbert Baker, was started in 1910 to commemorate South Africa’s Union-status, obtained in that year. It took three years to complete.

Although entrance to the building itself is prohibited for security reasons, the beautiful terraced gardens, which boast a wide variety of indigenous plants, are open to the public and provide breathtaking views over the city.

The gardens also house numerous statues and memorials, including statues of former presidents and a war memorial.
