Pretoria City Hall

In 1931, Pretoria achieved its city status. The Pretoria City Hall was built to celebrate this milestone.

The building was inaugurated in 1935. In front of this Italian classical style building is the picturesque gardens and fountains of Pretorius Square, one of many beautiful parks scattered across the city. Three statues significant historic figures in Pretoria's history can be found in the park:

Martinus Pretorius statue – Founder of Pretoria and first president of the South African Republic (ZAR)

Andries Pretorius statue – A Voortrekker leader after whom Pretoria was named

Chief Tshwane statue – The metropolitan city of Tshwane (the new name of Pretoria) was named after him. This statue is the newest of the three and was unveiled in 2006.
